FOLLOW MY LEAD

One of the reasons the dog and wolf have managed to survive for so long throughout history is because of their social structure of living in a pack. Pack’s are extended family groups and they have a clear order with the strongest male and female as the leaders of the pack. Strong leadership is essential to the survival of the pack.

No matter what type of dog or the age of the dog you bring home, your dog will be looking to understand the order of his new pack. It is essential that you establish clear, calm and consistent leadership from the moment you bring your dog home. Your dog will be able to settle into the role of being ‘the dog’ without the pressure of thinking he must be the leader. Dogs understand the need for a leader. In the absence of clear leadership, dogs may think, “if no-one else is going to lead, I better”. With a strong willed dog, this can result in problems. In a dog that lacks the skills or personality of a leader, this can lead to anxiety and stress.

The good news is that no matter how much your dog thinks he is in charge now, you can always introduce your new leadership regime. Dogs are much happier and better behaved when they understand their human owners are their pack leaders. Leadership is NEVER about hurting your dog and dominating your dog. The Canine Coach will teach you sound, humane methods to establish clear, calm and consistent leadership.
